The Coastal Youth Orchestra is looking for new members! The group is entering its eleventh season and is recruiting musicians of different abilities. CYO’s mission is to provide the best orchestral experience possible for young musicians. By promoting a supportive educational environment and a challenging yet nurturing atmosphere, our conductors provide an ideal place for young musicians to learn and grow.
Coastal Youth Orchestra is made up of three ensembles that meet for rehearsals on Tuesdays at Mt. Ararat High School. The “Fiddleheads” is a beginning strings ensemble recommend to younger students age 6-10 who are new to the violin, cello, viola or bass. This group is conducted by Nancy Roderick who is well known for her enthusiasm and sensitivity while working with young string players and for her dedication to music education. The Fiddleheads rehearse from 4:00-5:00 PM.
The “Coastal String Ensemble” is an intermediate string ensemble open to string players age 11-14. This group meets from 5:00-6:15 PM and is also conducted by Nancy Roderick.
CYO’s “Chamber Orchestra” is made up of more advanced string players with the addition of wind and percussion musicians. Karla Kelley is the conductor of this ensemble. Ms. Kelley is active throughout New England as a conductor. Since 1987 she has served as conductor of the Maine State Ballet Orchestra that performs the Nutcracker at Merrill Auditorium each year as well as many other groups.
CYO will have an open enrollment period through September and possibly October. Please contact Nancy Roderick to schedule an audition to join the group at nancyrod@gwi.net, 751-4718. More information is available at www.coastalyouthorchestra.org. The youth orchestra performs two seasonal concerts and provides outreach opportunities for young musicians.(09/17)
