Dynamic Volunteer Opportunity in Portland. Volunteer as a Middle or High School Academic Coach to support English Language Learners: Make it Happen! is an 8th-12th grade program in Portland Public Schools which provides English Language Learners (ELLs) personalized and structured academic and social support to ensure success in undertaking rigorous and challenging academic work that will prepare them for college. We currently have 75 students in the program, speaking eleven different languages including Somali, Arabic, Khmer, Spanish, Vietnamese, French, and Spanish to name a few.
Make It Happen! connects volunteers, called “Academic Coaches,” with students in both middle and high schools. Academic coaches meet one-on-one or in small groups for one to two hours every week to support students with academic language, organizational skills and study routines. Sessions occur at school, either in the library or in the Make It Happen! Academic Center, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
If you are interested in becoming a Make It Happen! Academic Coach, please visit our website or contact us directly to receive an application. Ongoing volunteer orientation and training are provided as well. Thank you in advance.
