Freeport Historical Society – 2nd Annual Historic Barns & Quilts tour
October 1, 2011: 10am – 2pm
Plan to enjoy an early day of autumn at the 2nd Annual Historic Barns & Quilts tour sponsored by Freeport Historical Society. Taking place Saturday, October 1st, from 10:00am until 2:00pm, this very special event will feature visits to four unique barns built during the late 18th through the early 20th centuries. Quilts selected to coincide with the timeframe of each barn will be on display. Leading the tours are quilt expert, Kathy Kenny and barn expert, Don Perkins.

Freeport Historic Barns & Quilts Tour is a fundraiser of Freeport Historical Society. Tickets are $25.00pp and must be purchased in advance. Freeport Historical Society – 36th Annual Pettengill Farm Day
October 2, 2011: 10am – 3pm
Over its 240 year history, the 140-acre saltwater Pettengill homestead was farmed, producing corn, potatoes and other staples and served as home to a variety of barnyard animals including cows, sheep, chickens, pigs, and more. In a tradition begun in 2009, Freeport Historical Society will again be welcoming barnyard animals (and happy alpacas) back to “the farm” as we celebrate our 36th year of Pettengill Farm Day.

n addition, there will be live music on our stage from Celtic to country to bluegrass , our tent for story telling for children and adults, juggling by Will Silvers, recent winner of the junior competition of the World Juggling Federation, hay wagon rides, our NEW Return to Learning Tent featuring a variety of presentations and workshops, our Master Trades area displaying classic trades, our NEW Active area featuring kite flying and making, hula hooping, geocache with LL Bean and so much more. There is something fun for everyone. Lunch will be available from 11am – 2pm.

Freeport Historical Society (FHS), a non-profit organization, owns Pettengill Farm, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. FHS’ mission is to keep Freeport’s past present by advocating, educating, collecting and sharing Freeport’s long history through innovative and relevant public programs.
Suggested event donation: $5.00 adults, $2.00 children – which spells great fun at a great value.

Beginner Sewing Classes starting Mid-October: Now enrolling adult and teenage students for 8- to 10-week sewing classes. Students will choose projects and will be guided through the process of using a pattern, creating a pattern from and/or altering an existing piece, and gaining a close, working friendship and fluency with his/her sewing machine. We will work with different types of seams, button holes, and gathers along the way. Our focus will be on simple clothing patterns and sewn home goods, in addition to tackling a variety of gift ideas for the upcoming holiday season. Students are encouraged to add their own twists and interests to our syllabus. The cost is $160 for 8-weeks. Discount available for group sign-ups of 4 or more students. "Ego West and East"
When the early Buddhist translators used the English word 'Ego'in their translations they used the wrong word. Sadly, it has created many misinterpretations of Buddhism. The Tibetan term is sems and refers to the nonstop discursive thinking which we are unaware of but which completely dulls our direct experience of reality. 'Sems' is habitual thought which comments on every experience and in so doing removes us from that actual experience. Meditation is getting out of our habitual mind and into what is actually going on.

Rolling enrollment means there is no need to catch up, just come with a project in mind OR we can help you choose something beautiful and useful! Do you want to learn to install zippers or how to make buttonholes? Understand why we need to trim corners before turning a point and how to use all those mysterious “notions” at the fabric stores you visit. This is the place to take time for your own spirit while developing or honing your handwork skills!

Sublet for medical Student 9/24-10/22/2011: Visiting 4th year Medical Student from Waldorf Community in New York seeks housing for Vascular Surgery Clerkship at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Requires furnished room with WIFI or plug-in high speed cable. Ideally housing would be within 10 minutes walk of Maine Medical Center with own bathroom. Pluses would be off street parking and access to a kitchen and laundry machine, though no medical laundry would come to the house. I am Male, in my 30's and married. I love cats, dogs and gardens and am a respectful lodger. My wife is a eurythmist and we live up the road from Green Meadow Waldorf School. There will be times when I will keep unsocial hours as a Surgical Team Member and need a quiet environment and ease of coming and going at odd hours. Sadly the Medical School does not have any accommodation available for me during my visit so I am reaching out to you as the local Waldorf Community.
