College Admissions Essay Writing Workshop: My name is Nancy Goldberg and I will be offering a workshop in the fall to help seniors write their admissions essay for college applications. I have been a Waldorf parent for ten years, and I have completed Foundation Studies. I was a college English instructor and a high school English teacher for a number of years. Most recently, I have worked as a private tutor for high school students. In my capacities as an English teacher and as a private tutor, I have taught students how to write their admissions essays. I taught this workshop last year for Merriconeag seniors and references from families who have taken this workshop, as well as from families whose seniors I have tutored privately, are available upon request.
      Using the Common Application questions, we will evaluate sample essays for their technical aspects and analyze what colleges learn about students from their essays. We will utilize several brainstorming strategies to generate ideas and begin to crystallize students’ ideas. Once their ideas have taken shape, students will write outlines, which will be followed by rough drafts. They will peer-edit each other’s essays, and I will work with each student on polishing strategies. The primary focus will be on the “big” essay. If time allows at the end of the workshop, we will work on supplemental essays.
      The workshop will be held on Monday evenings at 7 pm starting on September 10th. We will be skipping the week of September 17th (Hermit Island) and October 8th (Columbus Day), and the last class will be on October 22nd. (We could finish one week earlier if everyone agrees to meet on Columbus Day.) There will be a total of five sessions, and the workshop will be completed prior to the earliest deadline for early decision applications. Each session will last 1-1 ½ hours and will be held on the Desert Road campus in the 8th grade classroom. The total cost of the workshop will be $125 per student, which will be due at the first session.
