Summer Craft Camp ~ Fun with Fiber & Fleece

July 18 - 22 - For ages 12 - 14 (entering grades 6, 7, 8)

July 25 - 29 - For ages 9 - 12 (entering grades 4, 5 & 6)

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
$175 per week
Led by Merriconeag Handwork Teacher, Julie Pennington

Summer Camp Afternooon Program Note: We have increased interest in an afternoon program for the two weeks of summer camp, July 18 through 29th. We will be designing a relaxed afternoon with lunch, restful activities, art projects, and games. The cost for extending the program to 3:00 will be an additional $50. Campers will need to bring a bag lunch. As we are shaping this afternoon program and the staffing around the age groups, we encourage interested families to contact Kathy Watko, bookkeeper@merriconeag.org, as soon as possible.

Intensify the heat of summer by working with wool. Come wash your fleece and prepare it for work. The course will involve carding our washed fleece, dying it, spinning it, weaving or knitting with it, or perhaps using a drum carder to make roving for spinning colored yarns, and felting.

     Julie Pennington was born and raised in New Zealand, but has spent most of her adult life in the U.S. After graduating from the School of Clothing and Textile Design, she opened a clothing boutique in Wellington, N.Z. The success of her designs eventually took her to New York where Julie worked for many designers, including Emmanuel Ungara, Donna Karan, and Marc Jacobs.
      The call of a more natural setting brought Julie to the Catskill Mountains in order to immerse herself into a life of fiber art and craft. She eventually returned to New Zealand with her husband and two young children to study Waldorf Education at Taruna College, where she received her diploma in 2009, and began teaching handwork at Merriconeag in the Fall of 2010.
